Description
QOBYZ: SPIRITUAL JOURNEYS THROUGH MUSIC

CONCERT by RAUSHAN ORAZBAEVA

6.30 pm, Friday, 14 November 2008

Born into a dynasty of musicians from Southwest Kazakhstan, Raushan Orazbaeva is a great living interpreter of the unique musical instrument known as the qobyz, a fiddle with two horsehair strings believed to have been invented by Qorqyt, the mythical first shaman and forebear of music among the Kazakhs. Surrounded by a sacred shamanic aura in keeping with its mysterious and richly versatile sound, capable of imitating sounds of nature and the human voice, the qobyz was suppressed and largely neglected during the Soviet era but has since been rediscovered and revived. Symbolic of this revival, Raushan Orazbaeva has also shaped its course: bringing alive the old repertory for new generations and wider audiences, through her extraordinary musicianship, she has transcended the boundaries of tradition, while evoking the deeply-rooted mediating and transformative power of the qobyz.

This concert will feature traditional instrumental pieces (kuiler) going back to Qorqyt and attributed to Ykhylas Dukenuly, as well as Raushan Orazbaeva’s own compositions for the qobyz.
